About this place
Jardim da Quinta de Santa Clara is a historic garden in Lisbon's Ameixoeira district, on the northern edge of the city. A former country retreat, it is now a public park with a formal, Baroque-revival layout. It suits visitors who want something calmer than central Lisbon.
What is the Quinta de Santa Clara?
A quinta de recreio is a Portuguese country estate where a family spent leisure time outside the city. This one is among the older examples in the area. The garden is also known as the Jardim da Ameixoeira, after its neighbourhood. Its layout follows the classical style of the 18th century, which later remodelling deliberately echoed.
What is the history of the estate?
The estate dates back to the end of the 17th century. It changed hands and names several times: it was known as Quinta Nova and as Quinta dos Mesquitas, after its owner in 1694. The Mesquitas family kept it until the early 19th century.
In the 1920s and 1930s the banker Augusto Carreira de Sousa remodelled the property thoroughly. He built the present palacete and entrusted the transformation of the gardens to the landscape gardener Jacintho de Mattos.
In 1974 the owner, D. Celeste Tavares de Carvalho, donated the estate to the City of Lisbon. Later restoration work tried to respect the garden's original design. It has been open to the public since 1983.
What is there to see?
The formal garden is arranged on four terraces linked by staircases. Balustrades and water mirrors give it its identity, as in classic Baroque gardens. The symmetry and the change of level give a walk here a clear structure: you move from one terrace to the next, and the views shift at each stage.
Is it worth a visit?
It works well for a short, quiet stroll, a rest in the shade, or if you enjoy historic gardens and landscape design. It is not one of Lisbon's headline sights, so it is usually calmer than the better-known parks.
