Igreja e Casa do Mosteiro de São Salvador de Moreira

About this place

Igreja e Casa do Mosteiro de São Salvador de Moreira, known locally as the Mosteiro de Moreira da Maia, is a former Augustinian monastery in Moreira, in the municipality of Maia, Porto District. Its church and adjoining monastic house were classified as a monument of public interest in 2012.

What is this place and where does it come from?

The community has medieval roots. Some sources point to the 11th century and an original dedication to Saint George, while others give far earlier dates, so the exact founding year is disputed. The monastery stood beside an old road linking Lisbon and Braga, also used by pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela, and ran a hostel for travellers.

In 1562 the house passed to the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine of Santa Cruz de Coimbra, called "crúzios" in Portugal. They raised the present complex, with building work running from the late 1500s into the early 1600s.

What makes Moreira special?

The monastery is tied to the Santo Lenho de Moreira, a relic said to be a fragment of the True Cross. Tradition holds that crusaders brought it here before 1085, and for centuries it drew pilgrims who credited it with miraculous cures.

When religious orders were dissolved in 1834, the monastic grounds were split from the church and sold to private owners. The estate later belonged to Luís de Magalhães, linked to the literary Geração de 70, the circle around Eça de Queirós and Antero de Quental. Eça de Queirós describes the property as Quinta de Refaldes in his novel "The Correspondence of Fradique Mendes".

What heritage protection does it have?

The complex was listed as a monumento de interesse público by Portaria n.º 740-C/2012, published in December 2012. A correction to that act followed in July 2014. A further 2014 order created a special protection zone that also covers the landscape and grounds around the buildings.

How do you get to the monastery?

Moreira lies in Maia, north of Porto and close to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. From central Porto the easiest way is by car or taxi. The site combines well with other stops in the metropolitan area, such as the heritage of Maia town or central Porto.

When should you visit?

The complex serves as a parish church and former estate, and part of the grounds is privately owned. Before travelling, check with the parish or the Maia municipality whether the church is open and whether interiors can be visited. A clear morning gives the best light for photographing the facade and surroundings.
