About this place
Igreja da Misericórdia de Viseu is a Baroque-Rococo church in the historic centre of Viseu, in north-central Portugal. It is among the city's most recognisable landmarks, and its elegant facade catches the eye of anyone strolling around the cathedral area.
What is the Igreja da Misericórdia?
The church belongs to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, a charitable brotherhood. Institutions of this kind appeared across Portugal from the late 15th century. They helped the poor, cared for the sick and arranged burials for the dead. The Misericórdia of Viseu was probably founded in 1510 or shortly before. The present church, however, is much younger than the brotherhood itself.
When and by whom was it built?
Construction began in 1775 to designs by master mason and architect António da Costa Faro, and work continued into the 19th century. It formed part of a wider urban renewal that Viseu went through in the mid-18th century, when new and impressive buildings were rising in the city.
What does the facade look like?
The facade is the church's main attraction. It is Rococo, a late phase of the Baroque. It develops on a single plane, with the portal as its focal point, topped by a balcony. Sturdy pilasters flank and support the portal, the windows are crowned with pediments, and two imposing bell towers give the building its vertical rhythm. The overall effect recalls the front of a Baroque palace more than a modest brotherhood chapel.
What is inside?
The interior has a single nave and a main chapel. It contains three Neoclassical altarpieces. The calmer, more restrained interior contrasts nicely with the richly decorated exterior.
The complex also houses the Tesouro da Misericórdia, the brotherhood's treasury. It displays religious art, including paintings and sculptures from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
