Igreja da Misericórdia de Algodres

Algodres, Portugal

About this place

Igreja da Misericórdia de Algodres is an eighteenth-century brotherhood church in the municipality of Fornos de Algodres, in Portugal's Beira region at the foot of the Serra da Estrela. It is built in the Joanine Baroque style, and in January 2026 it was officially classified as a Monument of Public Interest (Monumento de Interesse Público).

What is a Santa Casa da Misericórdia?

The misericórdias are Portuguese charitable brotherhoods that since the Middle Ages have cared for the sick, the poor and prisoners. In Algodres the brotherhood was founded in 1621 by several people, including the local vicar and the abbot of Infias, and canonically instituted in 1622. The kingdom's census of 1758, however, notes that it may have existed as early as 1615. The church served as the seat of this community and the place of its services.

What does the building look like?

The church was built in the early eighteenth century. Heritage descriptions say that stones from the ruins of the village's old castle were used in its construction, which makes it an intriguing trace of the settlement's past. It has a single nave, and on the north side stand the outbuildings used by the Santa Casa.

The south facade is characteristic of Joanine Baroque. A straight-lintelled portal is topped by volutes and a scallop shell carved in ashlar. A cornice crowns the whole, bearing a trefoil cross flanked by pinnacles. The bell tower has two bell openings. Descriptions also mention the so-called "Varanda de Pilatos", a distinctive architectural detail of the building.

What can you see inside?

The interior is known for altars with gilded woodcarving (talha dourada). The main altarpiece is in the Joanine style. The ensemble is regarded as artistically valuable, and among its treasures is a seventeenth-century triptych.

The ceiling above the main altar also draws the eye. It carries 36 oil paintings of saints and symbols of the martyrs of the early Church, the work of master Jerónimo da Cunha, dating from the eighteenth century.

Why visit?

It is a good stop for anyone seeking Portuguese Baroque in the Beira region beyond the large towns. The church is not huge, but it pairs modest, elegant exterior architecture with a richly decorated interior. History lovers will also enjoy the story of the old castle's stone and the long tradition of the charitable brotherhood.
