Husův vrch

About this place

Husův vrch is a small nature reserve on the slope of the hill bearing the same name, located in the Czech Republic's Central Bohemian Uplands, on the outskirts of the village of Hostomice, roughly 5 km northeast of the town of Bílina. The protected area covers just under 4.7 hectares and sits at an elevation of 220–230 meters, although the hill's summit itself reaches 266 meters. Geographically the site lies within the České středohoří (Central Bohemian Uplands) range, specifically in its Milešovské středohoří sub-region, within the Teplice district.

Why was this site protected?

Husův vrch is a classic cone-shaped hill of volcanic origin, a landform typical throughout the České středohoří range. The reserve was established in 1989, with its main purpose being the preservation of the heat-loving vegetation growing on the hill's sun-exposed slopes. The key species behind the protection status is the spring pheasant's-eye (Adonis vernalis), a plant associated with dry, warm habitats that has become increasingly rare across Central Europe due to changes in land use.

What does the surrounding landscape look like?

The hill stands out for its regular, cone-like shape, a form shared by many elevations in the České středohoří that were formed through past volcanic activity. The warm, sun-facing slopes allow a distinctive steppe-like and xerothermic plant community to persist, quite different from the vegetation found on the shadier terrain nearby. A buffer zone of more than 6 hectares has also been designated around the core protected area, intended to shield the reserve from negative influences originating in the surrounding landscape.

Who manages the reserve?

The nature monument (přírodní památka) is cared for by the Regional Authority of the Ústí nad Labem Region (Krajský úřad Ústeckého kraje), which is responsible for monitoring habitat conditions and carrying out the conservation measures needed to maintain the populations of protected plant species.

Where exactly is Husův vrch located?

The reserve lies within the cadastral territory of Hostomice nad Bílinou, directly adjacent to the village of Hostomice. This places it in the heart of the České středohoří — a region known for its distinctive cone-shaped volcanic hills, numerous viewpoints, and a mosaic of botanically valuable habitats.
