Liptická vyhlídka

Liptická vyhlídka is a viewpoint above Duchcov, in the Teplice district of the Ústí nad Labem region in northern Czechia. It sits on one of the hills of the former Pokrok spoil heap — built up from overburden during brown coal mining — right on the spot where the village of Liptice stood until 1976. The village was cleared away to make room for open-pit mining, and after landscape reclamation a pergola-style viewpoint now occupies the same hilltop, looking out over the whole region.

What can you see from the viewpoint?

The viewpoint takes the form of a rectangular pavilion or pergola offering a wide, almost circular panorama. On one side stretches the Czech Central Highlands (České středohoří), with the distinctive peak of Milešovka and the rock formation of Bořeň, often compared to a petrified lion from the Czech coat of arms. On the other side rise the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory). The easiest starting point is Duchcov Castle, where a paved path begins. The route follows the yellow-marked tourist trail along Mostecká street, passes a row of garages, and then climbs uphill to the viewpoint itself. The distance from the town center is roughly half a kilometer to a kilometer, so the walk is short, though the final stretch is a genuine climb. Benches are placed along the way for anyone who wants to rest, and information boards explain the area's mining history.

Close to the viewpoint lies Lake Emma (Jezero Emma), a body of water that formed as part of the reclamation of the former mining land and has since become a natural feature of the landscape. Nearby is also a tongue-in-cheek attraction known as the Duchcov Marina, presented as the first Czech sea port — an offbeat stop worth combining with the rest of the walk.
