About this place
The Holy Trinity Church in Pernink is a Baroque church standing in this small mountain town in the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), in the Karlovy Vary region of the Czech Republic. The current brick building replaced an earlier wooden chapel dedicated to St. Anne, which had previously stood on the same site. Construction of the new brick church, built in an Alpine style, began in June 1714, and the ceremonial consecration followed in December 1716 — the whole project took just over two years.
What does the church look like from the outside?
The building has a single-nave, rectangular layout without particularly distinctive stylistic ornamentation — a modest, rural take on Baroque design typical of mountain parishes in this region. The nave is covered with a gable roof, while the presbytery, offset from the main axis, ends in a rounded wall and is topped with its own hip roof. In front of the western façade rises a slender, pyramid-shaped tower crowned with a pointed spire roof — the feature that gives the church its recognizable silhouette from a distance. A small sacristy is attached to the northern side of the building.
What is worth seeing inside?
Inside, the ceilings are flat and were built using an older technique based on reed matting — a construction method typical of rural churches of that era, cheaper and lighter than a masonry vault. The nave retains a wooden, three-sided gallery running around three walls of the interior, a solution that allowed the church to seat more worshippers without enlarging the building itself.
The main decorative feature is the high altar, framed with ornate acanthus carving and angel figures — this part of the altar dates from the early 18th century, making it nearly contemporary with the church building itself. The painting set into the main altar is somewhat later, created in the second half of the 18th century. The rest of the interior furnishings — pews, decorative elements, and smaller liturgical objects — are Rococo in style and likewise date from the second half of the 18th century. Together, these layers create a fairly coherent Baroque-and-Rococo interior, even though it took shape gradually over several decades.
