Church of Saint Martin (Nejdek)

Nejdek, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Martin is a Roman Catholic parish church in the town of Nejdek, in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, close to the German border. Its plain rustic Baroque exterior hides a far richer interior, and it stands as the oldest church building in town.

How old is the church in Nejdek?

The church is first mentioned in a document from 1354, making it the earliest church known to have existed in Nejdek. The original structure was a modest Gothic building, altered and enlarged repeatedly over the following centuries to match changing architectural tastes. The decisive rebuild came in 1755–1756, when the church was extended by more than half its former size, giving it the form still standing today.

What does the interior look like?

Most of the interior furnishings are Rococo, dating from that mid-18th-century renovation. The main altar, however, was not built on site — it was brought to Nejdek from Prague around 1779, taken from a dissolved Servite monastery in Prague's Old Town. The church also holds a Rococo organ that fits the overall stylistic scheme of the interior.

A separate point of interest is a Renaissance tombstone, traditionally believed to depict Count Kryštof Šlik, who was buried in the church crypt in 1578. It is one of the few remaining traces of the Šlik family, a noble house that shaped much of the region's history for centuries.

Why is the church described as "non-oriented"?

Architectural descriptions of the church often note that it is non-oriented, meaning its main axis does not follow the traditional rule of placing the chancel toward the east. This layout results from the constraints of the site, which shaped every version of the church built there over the centuries.

What stands around the church?

Right next to the building are two Baroque monuments: a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1710 and a Trinity column from 1717. Together with the church, they form a coherent historic ensemble typical of Czech small towns from that era.

The church has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964, confirming its historical and architectural significance for the region.
