Hassek garden

Třebíč, Czechia

About this place

Hassek Garden (Czech: Hasskova zahrada) is a small riverside park in Třebíč, Czech Republic, running along the Jihlava River on the border between the Podklášteří and Nové Dvory districts. Covering roughly half a hectare, it offers a quiet green space close to the historic town centre and doubles as a natural walking route toward Třebíč's well-known Jewish Quarter.

Where exactly is Hassek Garden located?

The garden sits just north of Třebíč's town centre, straddling the Jihlava River — half of it falls administratively within Podklášteří, the other half within Nové Dvory. On its eastern edge, the park borders the Týnský stream, crossed by a footbridge leading toward Zdislaviny Street. To the north, Soukenická Street runs alongside the park, with paths continuing to a bridge over the river. This position makes Hassek Garden a convenient starting point for visiting the Jewish Quarter and the Basilica of St Procopius, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where does the name come from?

The park is named after the Hassek family, who once owned a tannery in Třebíč's Inner Town (Vnitřní Město). The name honours that local merchant family, though the park hasn't always carried it — for a long stretch it was known under a very different official title.

How has the park changed over time?

The garden took its present layout in 1984, when three old buildings on the site were demolished as part of a reconstruction that cost around 750,000 Czechoslovak crowns. Before that, the site was officially known as Bohumír Šmeral Park. It wasn't until the second half of 1991, following the political changes in Czechoslovakia, that the park was renamed Hasskova zahrada, restoring the memory of the merchant family connected to the area. Another milestone followed in 1995, when the footbridges linking the garden to the Jewish Quarter were completed, permanently tying the park to one of the town's most significant historic districts.

What else is worth seeing nearby?

A walk through Hassek Garden works well as a lead-in to Třebíč's Jewish Quarter, with its synagogues and old Jewish cemetery, as well as the nearby Basilica of St Procopius, a UNESCO-listed monument. The park itself, running along the Jihlava River, also makes a pleasant spot to rest during a day of sightseeing — away from traffic, surrounded by greenery and water.
