Hájek (Třebíč)

Třebíč, Czechia

About this place

Hájek is a small but historically layered park on the northern edge of Třebíč, spreading across roughly 5 hectares in the Nové Dvory district above a side valley of the Týnský stream.

Where is Hájek located?

The park sits in the northern part of Třebíč, within the Nové Dvory neighborhood, reaching all the way to the city boundary. It rises over a side branch of the Týnský stream valley, giving it the feel of a small wooded hill tucked between residential streets.

How did Hájek get its name and history?

The site was once known as Přibíkovo boroví, or Přibíkův hájek, named after a former owner called Přibík, who eventually sold the forest to the Moll family, millers from nearby Jevkovice. For generations afterward, Hájek remained a private forest with restricted public access — a status that only changed after the Second World War, when the land opened up to local residents.

In 1957, a brick clubhouse was built on the site, becoming a gathering point for the community. The real turning point came in 1980, when construction began on a new housing estate right next to the forest, eventually expanding to its very edge. That same year, local youth took over running the clubhouse, founding the Hájek Youth Club to organize leisure activities for young people in the growing neighborhood. The adjoining housing estate itself later adopted the name Hájek, replacing its earlier name honoring General Ludvík Svoboda.

What can visitors find at Hájek today?

The former clubhouse has since been renovated and now operates as a youth club facility run by the Třebíč municipal police, housing a classroom, a low-threshold youth club, and exhibitions related to police work. The wooded park grounds themselves remain a green pocket between the Nové Dvory housing blocks and the natural slope of the valley — a quiet spot for a walk for residents of the surrounding estates.

Ownership of the land today is shared between the city of Třebíč and private owners, a reflection of its long history — from a private forest owned by a milling family, through its postwar opening to the public, to its current role as a neighborhood green space with a community facility at its heart.
