Hardegger Warte

Čížov, Czechia

About this place

Hardeggská vyhlídka (German: Hardegger Warte) is a rocky viewpoint perched above the Dyje river valley near the village of Čížov, inside Podyjí National Park in South Moravia.

Where is it and what can you see from the platform?

The viewpoint sits on a rock outcrop roughly 90 meters above the Dyje riverbed, right on the Czech-Austrian border. From the platform, visitors look out over a dramatic bend of the river canyon and, across the border, the small Austrian town of Hardegg — the smallest town in Austria — crowned by Hardegg Castle. The combination of steep, forested canyon slopes and the medieval castle silhouette makes this one of the most recognizable spots in the entire Podyjí park.

What is the history behind this lookout?

The first shelter at this spot was built back in 1885 and was known as the "Luitgardina Viewpoint." Over time the wooden structure fell into disrepair and was eventually dismantled. After World War II, the border strip along Austria became part of the Iron Curtain zone, sealed off from tourists until the fall of communism. Only in 1990, after the political changes, did members of an Austrian tourist club rebuild the ruined shelter. The restored lookout was then handed over to the administration of Podyjí National Park, which still maintains it today.

How do you get to Hardeggská vyhlídka?

A blue-marked hiking trail leads to the viewpoint, reachable both from Čížov on the Czech side and from the town of Hardegg on the Austrian side. The path runs along the rim of the Dyje canyon through Podyjí National Park, so sturdy footwear and water are worth bringing — parts of the trail cross uneven, rocky ground. A small shelter at the site offers a place to wait out rain or rest before heading back.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn offer the clearest views over the Dyje valley and comfortable temperatures for longer hikes through Podyjí's trail network. In summer, dense foliage on the canyon slopes can partly block the view of Hardegg Castle, while in autumn the changing leaf colors make the valley panorama one of the most photogenic sights in the whole region. In winter the trail can turn icy, so caution is needed near the edge of the rocky outcrop.
