Tisová stráň

Lančov, Czechia

About this place

Tisová stráň is a small but ecologically remarkable nature reserve located roughly 2 km north of the village of Lančov, in the Znojmo district of South Moravia. The protected area covers a steep, north-facing slope descending toward the Vranov Reservoir, at elevations ranging from 350 to 444 meters above sea level. The reserve spans 7.10 hectares and has held protected status since 1995.

Why was this site protected?

The reserve was established to safeguard an age-diverse, species-rich forest stand growing on a north-facing slope. This location holds the most abundant natural occurrence of common yew (Taxus baccata) anywhere in the Znojmo region — a tree species that has been drastically reduced across much of Central Europe due to historic logging and habitat loss. The herbaceous layer also supports perennial honesty (Lunaria rediviva), a plant typically associated with shaded, moist, undisturbed forest environments.

What can be found on site

The reserve protects a stretch of near-natural forest where yews grow alongside other deciduous and coniferous species of varying ages, from young saplings to mature, old-growth individuals. This layered age structure supports high biodiversity and provides habitat for numerous protected plant and animal species. Rock formations are scattered across the slope, adding geological variety to the landscape. The combination of steep, rocky terrain and northern exposure creates a distinctive microclimate — cooler and more humid than the surrounding lowland areas — which favors species that depend on such conditions and are otherwise uncommon in the wider region.

Location and surroundings

Tisová stráň sits directly beside the Vranov Reservoir, one of the largest and best-known bodies of water in South Moravia, popular among tourists and anglers alike. The proximity of this large reservoir contributes to the humidity levels on the slope, helping sustain the rare plant species found there. The village of Lančov itself lies in a scenic area typical of the Znojmo district's landscape — a mix of forested hills and river valleys.

Frequently asked questions

What does the name Tisová stráň mean? The Czech name directly references the site's main natural feature: "tis" means yew, and "stráň" means slope or hillside. The reserve's name literally translates to "yew slope."

Can visitors explore the reserve? As a protected nature reserve, the area should be visited responsibly — staying on marked paths, avoiding disturbance to the forest floor, and not picking plants, in order to preserve the fragile habitat.

Why is the yew population here so significant? Common yew was historically felled extensively for its hard wood and due to misconceptions about its toxicity. Natural, abundant stands like the one at Tisová stráň are now rare on a regional scale, making this reserve an important refuge for the species.

How do you get to the reserve? The reserve lies about 2 km north of the center of Lančov village, right next to the Vranov Reservoir, making it an accessible stop for anyone exploring the area around the reservoir.
