Fládnitzské vřesoviště

Hnanice, Czechia

About this place

Fládnitzské vřesoviště is a small nature monument located roughly half a kilometer north of the village of Hnanice, in the Znojmo district of South Moravia, right along the border with Austria. Sitting at an elevation of about 297 to 317 meters, the site falls under the administration of the Podyjí National Park, which also oversees the surrounding protected landscapes along the Dyje river valley.

Where does the name come from?

The reserve takes its name from an old historical path that once led from this spot to the Austrian village of Niederflädnitz. That route once connected communities on both sides of what is today the Czech-Austrian border, and its memory lives on in the name of the heathland itself.

What is being protected here?

Fládnitzské vřesoviště was established to protect xerothermic — warmth- and drought-loving — grassland communities of a steppe character. This kind of habitat is uncommon in the region because it depends on a specific combination of strong sun exposure, poor, rocky soil, and a long history of extensive, low-intensity farming. The rocky hillside that makes up the reserve is covered with characteristic patches of common heather (Calluna vulgaris), which gives the site its everyday name of "heathland." Alongside the heather, the area supports other plant and animal species adapted to dry, warm, steppe-like conditions, including several considered rare in this part of Moravia.

A former pasture still doing its job

The land that now forms the nature monument was historically used as pasture, and this traditional form of land management proved essential for preserving the open character of the landscape and its species richness. Without regular grazing, the site would gradually become overgrown with trees and shrubs, causing the valuable steppe communities to disappear. For that reason, the reserve's managers continue the tradition of sheep grazing, which keeps the heathland open and maintains suitable conditions for the demanding xerothermic plant species that live here.

Landscape and surroundings

The reserve lies in the scenic, hilly countryside typical of the Znojmo section of the Podyjí region, close to the Austrian border. Rocky ground and sun-exposed slopes create a local microclimate that favors heat-loving species rarely found in the cooler parts of the region. The heathland is surrounded by the farmland and natural woodland typical of the area, which further highlights the distinctiveness of this small steppe habitat.

Why visit?

It also makes a good stop for travelers exploring the Podyjí National Park and the area around Hnanice who are looking for lesser-known, quiet corners of nature away from the main tourist trails.
