About this place
Hallwyl Castle is one of the most important moated castles in Switzerland. It stands in the municipality of Seengen in the canton of Aargau, just north of Lake Hallwil, on islands surrounded by the River Aabach. It has been open to the public since 1925, and since 1994 it has belonged to the canton of Aargau as part of the Museum Aargau.
Why visit Hallwyl Castle?
Fortresses usually bring to mind a hilltop or a rocky crag. Here the river itself serves as the moat, and the walls rise straight out of the water. That setting makes the castle a distinctive day trip. The complex lies within a nature reserve, so the walk from the car park to the gate is a calm stroll past greenery and water, only a few minutes from the lake shore. Photographers like the spot because the masonry is reflected in the river.
What is the history of the castle?
Sources disagree on its age: some point to the 13th century, others speak of roughly nine hundred years. What is clear is the link to the von Hallwyl family, who lived here for centuries. The story of the place includes the building of the fortified islands, a great fire in 1415 that destroyed the castle, and later alterations. Around 1870 the building was converted, and the owners Wilhelmina and Walter von Hallwyl later rebuilt it. Today it is a listed monument.
What can you see inside?
The castle works as a museum. Its exhibitions tell the story of the von Hallwyl family and of the people who lived around the castle and worked for it, such as farmers and millers. A separate attic display is devoted to Franziska Romana, a former owner. Visitors also hear tales of the prisoners once held in the tower. Guided tours, workshops and audio tours are on offer, and a bistro operates in the courtyard.
How do you plan a visit?
The castle is in Seengen, north of Lake Hallwil. A paid car park is next to the castle. Opening times vary by season, so check current details with the Museum Aargau before you travel. The visit combines easily with a walk by the lake.
