Freudenau castle ruin

Untersiggenthal, Switzerland

About this place

Freudenau castle ruin is what remains of a medieval stronghold on the right bank of the Aare river in Untersiggenthal, in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It combines knightly history, clues about river trade and the results of decades of archaeology, in a green setting beside the water that suits a quiet outing.

How did Freudenau castle come about?

The castle was built around 1230–1240 on the site of an earlier farmstead set in cleared woodland. It is regarded as a Habsburg foundation. Its construction was tied to a bridge over the Aare, which researchers believe was probably built in the 1240s. The castle therefore served as a bridgehead and watched over the river crossing.

Who lived here?

The fortress was occupied by Habsburg ministerial nobles, who were household servants of the dynasty. They held the tower as a fief from their lords, while the surrounding grounds were held from the abbess of Säckingen. Such shared ownership was typical of medieval Switzerland, where several owners often had rights over one place.

Was it also a trading point?

Archaeologists noted a surprisingly large number of cellar rooms. From this they suspect that goods may have been transshipped here. It should be said, though, that the bridge mentioned in the sources has never been found, so some conclusions remain hypotheses.

Decline and destruction

Around 1300, as the Aare bridge disappeared, the castle began to lose importance. Around 1410 the entire complex, except the tower, was destroyed in a raid from Zurich. In 1466 the castle estate passed to the ferrymen of Stilli, the village on the opposite bank. The defensive tower was partly blown up in 1853.

What can you see today?

Extensive excavations took place from 1970 to 1982, after which the foundation walls and the ring wall were secured and conserved. This lets you trace the outline of the former buildings. The ruin is protected as a cantonal heritage monument. A large share of the finds is kept in the local museum in Untersiggenthal (Ortsmuseum), so a walk can be paired with a visit to its exhibition, if it happens to be open.
