Brestenberg Castle

Seengen, Switzerland

About this place

Brestenberg Castle (Schloss Brestenberg) is a three-story manor house dating from 1625, located in the municipality of Seengen in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, close to Lake Hallwil. It blends late Gothic and early Baroque features and is listed as a cultural property of national significance.

Who built Brestenberg Castle?

Hans Rudolf von Hallwil, a member of the family tied to the region, had the house built in 1625. His coat of arms is still displayed on the southern façade, the easiest detail to spot on the building. It is a residential manor rather than a fortress, so instead of defensive walls you will see the layout of an early 17th-century noble seat.

How did its fortunes change?

In the 18th century the owners were the Breit-Landenberg family (1709 to 1761) and then the Bernese patrician Colonel von Goumoens (1761 to 1805). In 1844 a divisional physician, Dr. Erismann, set up a hydrotherapy establishment here. Baths and a garden hall were added then, and a north wing followed in 1911. The property later operated as a hotel, from which guests could reach a private lakeside beach within minutes.

In 1984 the Winterthur property owner and art collector Bruno Stefanini bought the estate. He planned a museum, and later a hotel with a research centre. In the following years the building's condition was often described as poor, and Swiss media included it among the country's "lost places".

Heritage protection

The castle is on the list of cultural property of national significance and has been under cantonal protection since 1946. The Aargau monument inventory gives its address as Brestenbergstrasse 8.
