Frňovské

Frňovské is a hill rising to roughly 960 metres above sea level in the Javorníky mountain range, right next to the town of Karolinka on the Czech-Slovak border. It's one of the more popular short-hike destinations in this part of the Beskids, easy enough for families yet a good starting point for a longer ridge walk for anyone wanting more.

Where is Frňovské and how do you get there?

Karolinka sits in the valley of the Vsetínská Bečva river, about 20 km east of Vsetín, framed by the Vsetínské vrchy hills to the north and the Javorníky range to the south. The most straightforward approach from town follows the yellow-marked trail around Karolinka's water reservoir (the dam), then climbs toward Frňovské sedlo — a saddle at roughly 920 metres on the main Javorníky ridge, sitting directly on the Czech-Slovak border.

Frňovské sedlo works as a trail hub where red and yellow markers meet, and the saddle itself is a stop on the Javorníky-Družba educational trail, which introduces hikers to the natural and historical background of this border region. From the saddle, the red trail continues along the ridge to Malý Javorník (1,021 m), one of the range's higher summits, making it easy to stretch the day into a longer, more scenic outing.

Within a few kilometres of the saddle you'll find several other attractions worth combining with the hike: the Kohútka ski resort (about 3.4 km away), the Stratenec lookout tower (about 4.3 km), and the picturesque village of Velké Karlovice (about 6.9 km), known for its wooden folk architecture and Wallachian traditions. That spread of nearby sights makes it easy to plan a loop rather than backtracking the same way.

When should you visit?

Spring and early summer are best for catching the orchid meadows in bloom, while autumn tends to offer the clearest air and the longest views from the ridge. In summer the trail is also a popular starting point for longer ridge tours through the Javorníky. In winter, the area around the saddle and the nearby Kohútka resort switch over to skiing, so the region stays interesting year-round — just note that a winter hike up to Frňovské itself calls for proper footwear and caution on icy stretches.
