About this place
Forte do Alto do Duque (Fort of Alto do Duque) is a nineteenth-century fort in Lisbon, set at the south-western edge of the Monsanto Forest Park in the Ajuda parish. It is a good stop for anyone interested in military history and in the lesser-known corners of the Portuguese capital.
Where is it and what does the name mean?
The fort stands on a hill in western Lisbon, on the border of Monsanto, the city's largest green area. The name refers to the Duke of Cadaval: the fort was built on land that once belonged to the duke's estate (quinta). Its coordinates are roughly 38.704 N, 9.222 W.
When was it built and why?
Construction ran from 1875 to 1890. The fort belonged to the Campo Entrincheirado de Lisboa, the entrenched camp meant to protect the Portuguese capital. Together with the Bom Sucesso fort, it defended the mouth of the Tagus around Monsanto.
What does it look like?
The fort has an irregular pentagonal plan. It is sunk into the ground, level with the surrounding terrain, and ringed by a moat. This design, typical of late nineteenth-century fortifications, kept the structure low-profile and harder to hit with artillery from a distance.
What happened here?
- 1901 – Portugal's first wireless communication was sent from the fort. A message crossed the Tagus to the Trafaria fort, a distance of about 4,300 metres.
- 1932 – a military detachment bearing the fort's name was created.
- 1936 – the fort saw action. It returned fire on Portuguese navy ships that had mutinied and tried to leave the Tagus to support Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War.
- After the Carnation Revolution – it served as headquarters of the Continental Operational Command (COPCON).
Can you visit?
The fort is linked to the Portuguese army, so access depends on its current users. Check up-to-date information before you go, since entry rules can change. Even if the interior is closed, the Monsanto surroundings make the trip worthwhile.
What else is nearby?
Its position at the edge of Monsanto Forest Park makes it easy to combine with a walk in the woods. The Ajuda district, known for its historic landmarks, is close, as is the Bom Sucesso fort, which formed part of the same defensive line at the mouth of the Tagus.
