About this place
Fort of Paimogo (Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo) is a small Baroque coastal fortress from the 17th century. It sits above Paimogo beach near the town of Lourinhã in the Lisbon District of Portugal, on high ground overlooking the Atlantic, and it counts among the best-preserved coastal forts in this part of the country.
When and why was the Fort of Paimogo built?
Work began in 1674 on the orders of D. António Luís de Menezes, Marquis of Marialva and later Count of Cantanhede, a leading figure of the war to restore Portuguese independence. The fort was meant to defend this stretch of coast and formed part of a second line of fortifications running from the stronghold at Peniche down to the mouth of the Tagus.
It stopped serving a military purpose in 1834. Today its enemy is different: coastal erosion, which threatens the site's long-term survival.
What does the fort look like?
It is a small bastioned fort in the military architecture of the Baroque period. The plan is square, and cylindrical sentry boxes (guaritas) with conical roofs mark the corners. What makes it special is how little it has changed over the centuries. Wikipedia describes it as an almost unique example of a fort from that era that has not been altered since.
What happened here in 1808?
The fort stood witness to events of the Napoleonic period. In 1808, British troops under General Anstruther landed nearby. For many visitors this episode gives the place a significance beyond purely local history.
Is the fort protected?
Yes. Since 1957 the Fort of Paimogo has held the status of Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público), one of the forms of heritage protection used in Portugal. Erosion is still a real concern, so it is worth checking the Lourinhã municipality's website for the current condition of the site.
What to combine with a visit
The fort stands right by Paimogo beach, so it pairs well with a walk along the cliff-lined shore. The surroundings offer Atlantic views, and the building can be appreciated from the outside, including from the beach below. The coordinates are roughly 39.2874 N, 9.3405 W. The town of Lourinhã is close, making the fort an easy stop on a trip along Portugal's west coast, north of Lisbon.
