Castelo de Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras, Portugal

About this place

Torres Vedras Castle (Castelo de Torres Vedras) is a medieval fortress in the Estremadura region of Portugal, in Lisbon District, roughly 40 km north of the capital. Set on a hill above the town, it packs Roman, Moorish, medieval and Napoleonic-era history into one compact site.

What is the history of Torres Vedras Castle?

People used this hill as early as Roman times. Two Roman cisterns, along with tombstones and coins found here, back that up. The Moors raised the first walls, but when Afonso I, Portugal's first king, retook the town in 1148, much of that early work was destroyed. In the 13th century King Denis reinforced the defences, and the castle later served on occasion as a royal residence. Historical accounts say João I decided here on the 1414 expedition to seize Ceuta in North Africa, a step often seen as the start of the Age of Discovery.

What role did it play in the Peninsular War?

In 1809 the castle became part of the Lines of Torres Vedras, the defensive system laid out under the Duke of Wellington to stop a French invasion. Together with nearby Fort of São Vicente on the hill to the north, it guarded the main road between Coimbra and Lisbon, with a garrison of about 500 soldiers. British Royal Engineers adapted the fortress for artillery, and the castle gate was pulled down in the process.

How badly did the 1755 earthquake hit it?

The great earthquake of 1755 caused heavy damage. The Palace of the Alcaides and parts of the walls suffered most. Today visitors mainly explore the surviving stretches of fortification and the grounds rather than a fully preserved residence.

What else is worth seeing nearby?

  • Remains of the Lines of Torres Vedras – protected as national heritage, with many sections walkable.
  • Fort of São Vicente – the castle's companion in the old defensive scheme, on the neighbouring hill.
  • Leonel Trindade Municipal Museum – hosts an exhibition on the Lines of Torres Vedras.

Is it worth a visit?

Yes, especially if you enjoy military history or want a quieter alternative to the busier castles around Lisbon. It fits neatly into a day exploring Wellington's forts and redoubts, and the walls give views over the town and surrounding hills.
