Faro de Valencia is a modern lighthouse standing on the north side of the entrance to the Port of Valencia. Unlike the stone-built lighthouses found along much of the Spanish coast, this structure dates only from 2015, and it drew attention from engineers worldwide for a simple reason: it was the first lighthouse on the planet built entirely from composite materials.

What does the Valencia port lighthouse look like?

The tower stands 32 metres tall and is made up of eight tubular carbon-fibre columns, tied together by four horizontal, octagon-shaped rings of fibreglass tubing. The result looks more like an open, latticed tower than the solid masonry shaft of a traditional lighthouse. The design is the work of architect Ignacio Luis Pascual Navarro, with construction carried out by the company Acciona.

Why use composite materials instead of steel or concrete?

The choice of carbon fibre and fibreglass was a direct response to the harsh conditions of a working seaport. Composite materials resist the corrosion caused by salt air and constant humidity far better than metal, and they need much less upkeep over time. For an active commercial port, that also means fewer maintenance closures interrupting day-to-day operations.

How much does the lighthouse weigh, and how was it built?

The entire structure weighs only 20 tonnes, remarkably light for a tower the height of a ten-storey building. That low weight meant the finished lighthouse could be manufactured off-site in Toledo and then transported in a single piece by special truck all the way to Valencia. On-site assembly was consequently far faster than building a conventional lighthouse piece by piece in place.

How does the light signal work?

The lighthouse is energy self-sufficient and relies on LED technology to produce its signal for ships entering and leaving the port. This low-power system lets the structure operate independently of external power supplies, a practical advantage for a navigational aid sitting right at the water's edge, where the port infrastructure meets the open sea.

Where can visitors see it?

Faro de Valencia stands at the end of one of the port's breakwaters, clearly visible from the quaysides and the roads leading toward Valencia's beaches. It isn't a structure open to the public for a visit inside, but its distinctive, open-frame silhouette is easy to spot from a distance and has become one of the recognisable landmarks along the city's waterfront.
