Faro de Punta Frouxeira

Faro de Punta Frouxeira is a lighthouse at the tip of Punta Frouxeira, in the municipality of Valdoviño, province of A Coruña, Galicia. It stands on a rocky cliff above the Atlantic, right at the edge of one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in Galicia — the lagoon and wetlands of Lagoa e Areal de Valdoviño.

What makes this lighthouse different?

Unlike most Galician lighthouses, which follow centuries-old classical designs, Faro de Punta Frouxeira is a genuinely modern structure. It was built between 1990 and 1992 and became operational in 1994. Its blue-and-white, geometric shape was a deliberate break from tradition, making it one of the most avant-garde lighthouses on this stretch of coast.

The tower itself is 30 metres tall, but because it sits on a high cliff, the light's focal plane reaches 75 metres above sea level, giving it a range of 23 nautical miles. It has been fully automated since it first went into service, and in 2012 it became one of the earlier lighthouses in the region to switch to LED lighting, cutting its energy use significantly. A 2008 renovation closed off the original stairwell, leaving a row of windows at different heights in its place. The lighthouse is managed by the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority.
