Faro de Cabo Prioriño

Faro de Cabo Prioriño is a small, still-operational lighthouse guarding the mouth of the Ría de Ferrol, one of the most distinctive inlets on Galicia's northern coast. It stands on the Cabo Prioriño headland - the stretch known locally as Cabo Prioriño Chico - right where the waters of the Ártabro Gulf meet the open Atlantic, a short distance from the city of Ferrol.

The interior is closed to visitors - this is a working navigation aid run by the Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao, not a museum. The real draw is the setting: rocky cliffs, sweeping views over the entrance to the Ría de Ferrol, and, just around the headland, Doniños Beach with its coastal lagoon, a resting spot for migratory water birds.

What's the history behind it?

The light was first lit on 10 July 1854. It has been upgraded several times since: the current light pattern - one flash every five seconds - dates from 1988, and in 1995 the station was fully electrified with a rotating Fresnel lens, electromagnetic drive motors, a backup generator and halogen lamps. Since that same year the lighthouse has been monitored remotely from the Port Authority's headquarters in Ferrol. It hasn't had an easy run: vandals wrecked the optical equipment in 1990, forcing months of repairs, and Cyclone Klaus tore off part of the roof in January 2009, which was later replaced. A resident technician has been posted at the site since 2008.

Spring and summer bring the most stable weather on this stretch of the Galician coast, making the cliff walk far more pleasant. Pick a day without strong onshore wind - the headland is fully exposed to Atlantic gusts.
