About this place
Farnese Gardens are a garden in Rome, on the northern part of Palatine Hill in central Italy. Created in 1550 by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, they are also known as the “Gardens of Farnese upon the Palatine.” This is a good place for a short walk with a historic backdrop.
Na miejscu można liczyć przede wszystkim na:
- a look at one of Rome’s most historic garden settings, laid out on the northern slope of Palatine Hill
- the story of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese’s 1550 project, which made these gardens the first private botanical gardens in Europe
- a chance to connect the visit with the wider history of early European botany, since the first botanical gardens of any kind in Europe had only recently been started by Italian universities in the mid-16th century
If you plan to visit, comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially if you want to combine the gardens with a longer stroll around the Palatine area. It is a fitting choice for travelers interested in history, early science, and a quieter stop in the center of Rome.
