About this place
Engelsmolen is a historic watermill standing on the Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek stream in the village of Aaigem, part of the municipality of Erpe-Mere in the East Flanders province of Belgium. It ranks among the oldest surviving mills of its kind in the region, with a history that stretches back to before 1494.
Where does the name come from?
Despite what the name might suggest, Engelsmolen has nothing to do with angels or England. It comes from the miller Engelbertus van Londersele (1749–1821), who was known locally by the shortened nickname "Engel." He ran the mill in the second half of the 18th century and left such a lasting mark on local memory that the building still carries his name today — Engelsmolen, literally "Engel's mill."
How the mill worked
Engelsmolen is an overshot watermill, meaning water flowing from above drives an iron bucket wheel. The current two-storey, three-bay structure presumably dates from 1774, though the site's origins go back much further — the first records of a mill at this location predate 1494.
Over the centuries the mill served several economic purposes. Its longest-running role was as a grain mill, but at different points it also functioned as an oil mill and as a flax scutching mill, processing flax fibers. Today Engelsmolen operates exclusively as a grain mill.
Expansion and architecture
In the second half of the 19th century the mill complex underwent significant expansion. A new miller's house was added in neoclassical style, built as a so-called double house. This transformed Engelsmolen from a modest structure into an extensive complex that also included barns, stables, and a bread oven — making it not just a mill today, but an entire historic milling homestead.
The whole site sits in a picturesque, tree-lined valley along the Molenbeek stream, adding to its scenic character.
Heritage protection
Engelsmolen was the first watermill in the municipality of Erpe-Mere to receive protected monument status, achieved in 1976. Decades later, in 2004–2007, the surrounding Molenbeek valley itself was also designated a protected landscape. This dual protection has preserved not only the building but also its natural surroundings.
