About this place
De Bruul is an urban park in the heart of Leuven, stretching along the Dijle river between Pereboomstraat, Halvestraat, Raoul Claesstraat, Brouwersstraat and Fonteinstraat. It is one of the few sizeable green spaces right in the city centre, making it a popular spot for both residents and visitors looking for a break from the surrounding streets.
Where does the name come from and what is the park's history?
The ground occupied by the park today has roots going back to the Middle Ages. From 1414 to 1797, this site held the garden of the Priory of Saint Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins. After the priory was dissolved and the land went through further changes over the following centuries, the park in its current form, open to the public, was established in 1957. In August 2019, the city of Leuven announced plans to expand the park by more than 2 hectares, adding to the amount of green public space available in the city centre.
What can you do in De Bruul?
The park has several entrances, making it easy to reach from different parts of the centre. It includes a children's playground and a basketball court, which makes it a favourite destination for families and young people looking for an active way to spend time outdoors. A community meeting centre also operates within the park grounds, serving as a local hub for residents.
De Bruul doubles as an event space — food truck festivals and intercultural events such as the World Festival are held here. Thanks to its location along the Dijle, the park forms a natural extension of the riverside walking routes, connecting to other green areas along the river as it runs through Leuven.
How do you get to De Bruul?
The park sits right in Leuven's city centre, within easy walking distance of the market square and the city's main attractions. A public transport stop, Leuven De Bruul, serves the area, including connections toward the Kessel-Lo district (Sparrenboslaan), and the park also functions as a "hoppinpunt" — a mobility hub combining different modes of transport such as cycling, buses and shared vehicles in one location.
