Crni vrh

Prapatnica, Croatia

About this place

Crni vrh is the highest peak of the Vilaja mountain range, standing at 739 metres above the village of Prapatnica in the hinterland of Trogir, Dalmatia. Vilaja forms a natural border ridge between the Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia counties, stretching from northwest to southeast in line with the Dinaric range. Besides Crni vrh, the ridge includes three more summits: Bulina greda (648 m), Metlica (719 m) and Sirišćak (705 m).

How do you get to Crni vrh?

The starting point is the village of Prapatnica, located along the Vrpolje–Trogir road, roughly 14 km from Trogir and 31 km from Šibenik. This is the only marked approach to the summit, which makes it the obvious choice for anyone planning to hike Crni vrh. The trail leaves Prapatnica (396 m) and climbs through the small hamlet of Bojići (430 m) before continuing to the top.

How long does the hike take and how difficult is it?

The loop from Prapatnica via Bojići to Crni vrh and back covers about 4.3 km and takes roughly 1 hour and 47 minutes of walking time. The ascent and descent together add up to around 340 metres of elevation change, with an average gradient of about 17%. That profile suits reasonably fit hikers and requires no technical equipment, though sturdy footwear is recommended given the rocky, karst terrain typical of the Dalmatian hinterland.

What will you see at the top?

The summit is marked by a concrete trigonometric pillar bearing the plaque "Vilaja – Crni vrh (739 m)", next to a metal box containing a rubber trail stamp — a traditional feature of Croatian mountain trails that hikers use to mark their logbooks. The real reward, though, is the view: from Crni vrh you can see a wide panorama that takes in Dinara, Svilaja, Kamešnica, Biokovo, Mosor, Kozjak, Opor and Labištica, with picturesque hinterland villages scattered below.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the terrain is rocky and offers little shade, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the climb, with milder temperatures and generally better visibility. Summer heat in this part of Dalmatia can be intense, so an early morning start and a good supply of water are advisable. Winter conditions can be windy, but the route rarely requires specialised winter gear.
