Crêt de Chalam

Chézery-Forens, France

About this place

Crêt de Chalam is a 1,540-metre summit rising on the border between Chézery-Forens and Champfromier, right in the heart of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. It ranks among the most rewarding hiking destinations in the French Jura, known chiefly for the sweeping panorama waiting at the top.

How do you get there?

Most hikers set out from the village of Chézery-Forens itself, tucked into the Valserine valley. From there the trail climbs through forest alongside the Forens stream, a quiet, shaded stretch that eases you into the walk. Once the trees thin out, the path passes the ruins of Grand Mannet, a former pastoral settlement, before joining the Chalam ridge, which leads almost directly to the summit. The final stretch is tackled via a set of steps cut into the rock — a distinctive and memorable finish to the climb.

The full loop covers roughly 15 kilometres with about 1,000 metres of elevation gain, making it a demanding full-day outing that typically takes 6.5 to 7 hours. Sturdy hiking boots, enough water for the whole day, and trekking poles are all worth bringing, especially for the rocky final approach.

What will you see?

The payoff is one of the finest viewpoints in the whole Jura range. From the top of Crêt de Chalam, the Valserine valley unfolds below, with the Jura ridgeline stretching beyond it and, on clear days, the distant outline of Mont Blanc. The Chartreuse and Belledonne massifs and the Bugey mountains also come into view. It's this wide, multi-directional panorama that draws both seasoned hikers and landscape photographers to the summit.

Along the way, beyond the views, look out for the high-altitude meadow vegetation typical of the Jura and the remains of Grand Mannet, a reminder of the area's pastoral past.

When should you visit?

The best window for climbing Crêt de Chalam runs from April to October, when the trail is free of snow and the ridge is safe to cross. Outside that season, especially in winter, the route can turn snowy and icy, calling for proper winter gear and mountain experience. In summer, an early start pays off — both to beat the heat on the exposed ridge sections and to reach the summit before the fog that can roll into the Jura and cut visibility during the day.
