Church of the Holy Name of Jesus (Plzeň)

Pilzno, Czechia

About this place

The Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, known to locals almost exclusively by its folk nickname "U Ježíška" (roughly, "at the little Baby Jesus"), stands in the Východní Předměstí (Eastern Suburb) district of Plzeň. It is one of only four churches in the Czech Republic dedicated to this particular patronage, yet the only one that carries such an intimate, informal name in everyday speech.

Where does the building's history begin?

The site's roots likely go back to the Middle Ages — a small chapel already appears at this location on a map of Plzeň drawn by Jan Willenberg in 1602. Willenberg depicted it as a square structure topped with battlements and a pyramidal roof, a rather fortress-like appearance for a place of worship.

The church took on a form close to what stands today in the 1740s, built at the initiative of Petr Pavel Helffer, a Plzeň physician who also served as the town's mayor. Construction proceeded in stages: the original square sanctuary was extended between 1745 and 1746, and a new nave was added at the start of the 19th century. This layered building history explains why the structure doesn't read as stylistically uniform — it's the visible result of several generations of alterations stacked on top of one another.

Why was the church never owned by a church institution?

One of the more unusual facts about this building: it has never belonged to any church institution. From the outset it remained in private hands, an uncommon arrangement for a Baroque-era church. Today the building is protected as an immovable cultural monument and serves the Plzeň congregation of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession.

What should visitors know before stopping by?

The church sits in the eastern part of Plzeň, in the Východní Předměstí district. Because the building is privately held and currently used by an Evangelical congregation, access to the interior may be limited to service times or occasional open events such as Noc kostelů (Church Night).

Frequently asked questions

Does the nickname "U Ježíška" relate to Christmas? The nickname derives from the church's official dedication — the Holy Name of Jesus — which in Czech popular tradition was shortened into an affectionate form referring to the Baby Jesus.

Is this a Catholic church? The building currently serves a congregation of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession rather than a Roman Catholic parish; in fact, it has never formally belonged to any church institution and remains private property.

How old is the church? The earliest traces of a building on this site date back to the early 17th century, as shown on a 1602 map, while the structure standing today mostly dates from the 18th and early 19th centuries, when it was expanded in several stages.

Is the building a protected monument? Yes, the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in Plzeň is listed as an immovable cultural monument.
