Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Plzeň

Pilzno, Czechia

About this place

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Plzeň is a Gothic monastery church and one of the oldest sacred buildings in the city. It stands in the southeastern part of Plzeň's old town, on a plot marked out already during the founding of New Plzeň, and together with the former Franciscan monastery forms a protected historic complex listed as an immovable cultural monument.

When was the church built?

Construction of the monastery complex most likely began shortly after the founding of New Plzeň, that is after 1295. The first written record of the monastery dates from 1336, by which time the presbytery had already been completed and work was continuing on the naves. Around 1340 the arcades between the naves were built, and roughly a decade later, around 1350, the three-nave space was vaulted — essentially completing the Gothic construction of the church.

What has the church survived over the centuries?

Adjoining the city's fortifications, the monastery complex suffered during the Hussite sieges of Plzeň, most recently in 1434, when the surrounding buildings — and inevitably the church itself — were damaged. The next major turning point came in the 18th century: between 1723 and 1724 the west façade was rebuilt in Baroque style by the architect Jakob Auguston, and the wider Baroque renovation of the church was completed in 1740.

What does the church look like today?

The building has kept its three-nave layout with an elongated presbytery, covered by Gothic cross-ribbed vaults. These vaults, dating from the mid-14th century, remain one of the most valuable elements of the interior, preserving the church's original medieval character despite the later Baroque façade added on the western side.

What can visitors see in the adjoining monastery?

The cloister of the former Franciscan monastery, directly next to the church, today houses the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art of the Plzeň Diocese. It makes a natural extension of a visit to the church, showing liturgical objects and artworks tied to the diocese's history within the setting of the medieval monastery architecture.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in the historic centre of Plzeň, within the area of the former New Town, right next to the old town's dense historic fabric. Its position in the southeastern part of the old town makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk around the city's other landmarks.
