Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Mimoň
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands on a hill in the centre of Mimoň, a town in the Česká Lípa District of the Liberec Region in northern Bohemia. Its elevated position makes it the town's main landmark, visible from almost every corner of Mimoň.
How old is this church?
The first written mentions of a church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul on this site go back to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest churches in northern Bohemia. Several buildings stood here in succession over the following centuries before the current Baroque church was built.
When was the present building constructed?
The church seen today was built between 1674 and 1678, replacing an earlier structure on the same spot. The design is credited to the architects Giulio Broggio and Santino Bossi, while construction itself was carried out by Jan Ignác Dominik Putz of Adlersthurn.
What happened to the church in 1806?
In 1806 a fire destroyed the church along with an adjoining chapel. The building was subsequently restored, which is why it survives today in the form visitors see now.
What is worth noticing inside?
The main altar dates from 1810 and was modelled on the design of a main altar found in a church in Vienna. Above it hangs a painting of Saints Peter and Paul created by Josef Schmidt, a painter born in Mimoň. The same artist decorated the vault and walls of the presbytery with murals in 1828, giving the interior a unified 19th-century appearance.
What is the church's status today?
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is listed as a protected cultural monument, reflecting its historical and architectural importance to the region.
