About this place

Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Bílina

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a historic parish church in Bílina, in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic, standing just south of the town's main square along the road leading up to Bílina Castle. Its walls combine surviving medieval fabric with Renaissance and 19th-century rebuilding, making it one of the oldest and most significant religious monuments in the town.

How old is the church, and who founded it?

The site's history goes back to the 11th century. According to the chronicler Cosmas, a church was founded here around 1061 by Mstiš, a castellan serving under Prince Spytihněv. At that stage it functioned as a proprietary church belonging to a local nobleman rather than a public parish. Fragments of 13th-century masonry, visible today in the central nave and one of the side aisles, are the oldest surviving parts of the building.

When did the current parish church take shape?

Around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, as a new part of the town grew up nearby, a parish church was raised on the same site. In 1302, Albert of Žeberk transferred patronage over the parish to the Teutonic Order, tying the building to one of the major knightly orders active in the region at the time. This phase produced the late Gothic, three-aisled basilica with a five-sided closed chancel and a rectangular tower set into the northwestern corner of the main nave — the layout that still defines the building today.

What happened after the town fire of 1568?

A fire that swept through Bílina in 1568 badly damaged the church. Between 1573 and 1575 it was rebuilt in Renaissance style while keeping the earlier Gothic massing, which is why the structure now reads as a blend of both styles. The two-story Renaissance gallery inside the nave dates from this rebuilding. Funding for the reconstruction came in part from Kryštof Popel of Lobkowicz and his wife Anna, who also donated three bells cast near Ostrov, not far from Karlovy Vary.

What traces of the Lobkowicz family remain inside?

The interior preserves two Renaissance tombstones of Jiří and Litvín of Lobkowicz, dating from after 1580. They commemorate members of a noble family that played a significant role in Bílina at the time and that helped finance the church's rebuilding and furnishing after the fire.

What was added in later centuries?

During the Baroque period, vestibules were added on the church's south and north sides, along with a chapel dedicated to St. Roch. A further major renovation took place between 1870 and 1872, carried out to plans by the architect L. Denhardt, giving the building part of the 19th-century character it retains today. The church is now listed as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

How do you get to the church in Bílina?

The church stands in the center of Bílina, just south of the main square, on the route leading toward the castle that overlooks the town. That location makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the historic center and a stop at the castle hill above it.
