Osek Monastery

Osek, Czechia

About this place

Osek Monastery is a Cistercian abbey in the town of Osek, in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic, set at the foot of the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) in the country's northwest. With a history stretching back more than eight centuries, the complex ranks among the region's most important religious monuments, and its striking Baroque appearance conceals a much older Romanesque-Gothic core.

When was Osek Monastery founded?

The Cistercian community at Osek was established around 1196. The monks did not arrive directly - for nearly six years beforehand, the convent had lived in nearby Mašťov before finally settling at Osek, close to the Saxon border. By the 14th century the monastery had become a major economic and administrative power: its abbots ruled their subjects with near-total authority and exercised their own judicial jurisdiction, independent of the regional courts.

What turbulent events did the monastery live through?

The heaviest blow came in 1421, when Hussite forces burned the monastery during the Hussite Wars, forcing the monks to take refuge across the border at Altzella Abbey in Saxony. Recovery was slow. The formal dissolution of the monastery was annulled in 1614 by Pope Paul V, and on 4 July 1623 a decree ordered that Osek be returned to the Cistercians. From 1626 the community began rebuilding its standing, a process that reached full flower in the 18th century.

Where does the monastery's Baroque appearance come from?

The complex's present form is the result of a major reconstruction carried out between 1712 and 1718, commissioned by Abbot Benedikt Littwerig. The work was led by Octavio Broggio, an architect of Italian origin active in Litoměřice, who gave the monastery its unified, high-Baroque character. Before this rebuilding, the structure was Romanesque-Gothic, dating to the 13th century - traces of that earlier phase survive within today's building, hidden beneath its Baroque skin.

What makes up the monastery complex today?

The complex comprises the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the convent building, the abbot's residence (the prelature) with its distinctive clock tower, and a number of auxiliary buildings. Together they form a cohesive Baroque composition typical of large Central European abbeys of the 18th century, with a clear hierarchy of buildings - from the representative prelature down to more modest service structures.

What happened to the monastery in the 20th century?

After 1945, the Cistercians were forced to leave Osek as the community was expelled from the abbey in postwar Czechoslovakia. Monks did not return until 1989, and the community formally regained ownership of the monastery only in 1991. This decades-long break interrupted monastic life that had otherwise continued without interruption since the 17th century.

Where exactly is the monastery located?

The abbey stands in the town of Osek, in the Teplice district of the Ústí nad Labem Region, directly beneath the Ore Mountains. Its geographic coordinates are 50.620686 N, 13.694042 E.
