Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Psychiatric Hospital in Kroměříž

Kromieryż, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius stands at the heart of the Psychiatric Hospital complex in Kroměříž, Moravia — an institution originally known as the Landes-Heilanstalt Kremsier. Built as an integral architectural part of the medical facility, the Catholic church is today listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Who designed the church and the hospital complex?

The entire hospital complex, church included, was built in the Art Nouveau style. The design came from architects Hubert Gessner and Josef Šálek. Gessner drew on the work of his teacher, Professor Otto Wagner, who at the same time was designing a church for a similar psychiatric institution in Vienna's 16th district. The two churches share an architectural lineage even though they were built in different cities for different clients.

What does the building look like?

The church was raised on a square floor plan, an unusual choice for a sacred building of that era, when most churches followed a cross-shaped or rectangular layout with a separate chancel. Above the square structure rises a double concrete dome reaching 27 metres in height. That height makes the dome the dominant feature of the whole hospital site, visible from much of the complex and its surroundings.

When was the church consecrated?

The church was consecrated in July 1909. The timing was deliberate: the same period saw the ceremonial handover of the entire institution to its first director. The opening of the church and the official launch of the psychiatric hospital were therefore marked as part of one and the same occasion, underlining the importance of the whole project.

Is the church still used for religious services?

Yes. The building continues to serve its liturgical function — Mass with Sunday validity is celebrated here every Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Pastoral care of the church falls under the Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Maurice in Kroměříž.
