Church of Saint Wenceslaus in Hulín

Hulín, Czechia

About this place

Church of Saint Wenceslaus in Hulín is a parish church in the Moravian town of Hulín, standing at the crossroads of Romanesque origins and a Baroque rebuild that gave it its present appearance. Its blend of styles makes it one of the older sacred landmarks in the Zlín Region of the Czech Republic.

How old is the church?

Architectural analysis of surviving structural elements points to construction in the 1230s, when the building rose as a single-nave, late Romanesque structure. The earliest written record of the church dates to 1261, the year Hulín came under the authority of the Diocese of Olomouc. Despite centuries of alterations, sections of the original Romanesque masonry survive, most notably a monumental stone portal that remains the building's most distinctive feature.

What happened to the tower?

The tower was rebuilt in 1583-1584 on top of the original Romanesque walls, and a spiral staircase was added along its northern side to reach the upper levels. The tower proved unlucky in the following decades: lightning strikes set it on fire twice, in 1634 and 1635.

What damage has the church survived?

The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) brought further hardship, as passing troops plundered the church's interior on two separate occasions. A more devastating blow came in 1747, when a fire destroyed the roof, the wooden structural elements, and the organ. This destruction was the direct trigger for the thorough Baroque reconstruction carried out in the mid-18th century.

Who created the Baroque interior?

The Baroque furnishings are the work of the sculpture workshop of František Ondřej Hirnl, based in nearby Kroměříž. Local painter Jan Nevídal also contributed to the decoration, producing a monumental depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary that adorns one of the side altars. The resulting contrast between austere Romanesque stonework and a richly decorated Baroque interior is what gives the church its particular character today.

Is the church a protected monument?

Yes. The church complex has been listed among the Czech Republic's protected cultural monuments since 1958, formal recognition of a building that has weathered wars, fires, and repeated rebuilding across nearly eight centuries.

Where exactly is the church located?

The church stands in the centre of Hulín, a small town in the Zlín Region of Moravia, close to the town's main square (náměstí Míru). Its coordinates are 49.314767, 17.466631.
