Church of Saint Wenceslaus (Stará Boleslav)
About this place
The Church (Basilica) of Saint Wenceslaus in Stará Boleslav is one of the most significant sites of national memory in the Czech Republic — the traditional place of death of Duke Wenceslaus, patron saint of the country. The church stands in the center of a small town on the Elbe river, a short distance northeast of Prague, and has drawn pilgrims and history enthusiasts for over a thousand years.
How do you get there?
Stará Boleslav sits directly on the railway line from Prague, and the train journey from the capital takes roughly 30-40 minutes. The town is effectively merged with neighboring Brandýs nad Labem, and the two are usually treated as a single urban area. From the train station it's a short walk of about fifteen minutes through the main square and across the bridge over the Elbe to reach the church. Drivers will find parking available near the square in front of the building.
What will you see?
The current structure began as a Romanesque church, later substantially rebuilt during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It was founded by Duke Břetislav I around 1042, and in 1052 he established a collegiate chapter at the site — the oldest institution of its kind in the Czech lands. In the 12th century, a three-nave Romanesque basilica was built on the site of the earlier structure, and its basic shape has survived to this day despite numerous later alterations.
The church's history has not been without hardship: a major fire in 1640 caused serious damage, and repairs and reconstruction dragged on until 1691. Visitors today see the building after a thorough modern restoration — the basilica was ceremonially reopened on September 28, 2021, the feast day of Saint Wenceslaus himself.
The site's greatest significance, however, lies in its symbolism. The basilica stands on the site of an earlier church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, where, according to tradition, Duke Wenceslaus was murdered on September 28 (in either 935 or 929) by his own brother Boleslav, later known as "the Cruel." It was here that the saint's body was temporarily laid to rest before being transferred to Prague Castle. This event turned Stará Boleslav into one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Bohemia — an annual National Saint Wenceslaus Pilgrimage still takes place here today.
When should you visit?
The most notable date on the calendar is September 28 — Saint Wenceslaus Day, a Czech public holiday, when crowds of pilgrims from across the country converge on the basilica. Visitors who prefer a quiet, unhurried visit should aim for another time of year, such as spring or early autumn outside the feast day, when the town is far less crowded.
Who is this place for?
The Basilica of Saint Wenceslaus is a essential stop for anyone interested in Czech history and the origins of Czech statehood, as well as for travelers following sites connected to the cult of Central Europe's patron saints. It also makes a rewarding day trip from Prague for those looking to step outside the capital's main tourist circuit.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a visit to the basilica take? Seeing the interior typically takes 30-45 minutes, though it's worth setting aside extra time for a walk through the historic center of Stará Boleslav.
Is entry to the church free? Entering the church for prayer is generally free of charge; any fees would apply only to visiting specific parts of the monument outside of service hours, so it's worth checking locally.
Why is this site so important to Czechs? Because, according to tradition, this is where Duke Wenceslaus, the patron saint of Bohemia, was killed — a fact that turned Stará Boleslav into one of the country's central sites of national memory and an ongoing pilgrimage destination.
Can the visit be combined with other nearby attractions? Yes — neighboring Brandýs nad Labem has a castle and a historic town center, so both places can easily be explored together in a single trip.
