Church of Saint Martin (Mlékojedy)

Church of Saint Martin (Mlékojedy)

Mlékojedy, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Martin in Mlékojedy stands on a slightly raised terrace in the center of the village, on the site of a former cemetery next to the main square. It is one of the older surviving sacred buildings near Litoměřice, with roots reaching back to the reign of Charles IV.

How old is the church?

The church was most likely founded during the reign of King and Emperor Charles IV, between 1346 and 1378. By 1384 the parish already had its own priest, confirming that the church served as the village's religious center from an early stage. The original building was Gothic, dating to the 14th century.

What happened after the 1592 fire?

In 1592 the church was damaged by fire. The rebuilding focused mainly on the tower, which received a new, taller top floor along with distinctive sgraffito decoration on its facade. A weathervane bearing the date 1595 still tops the tower's spire today, marking the completion of the post-fire repairs.

Why does the tower look different from the rest of the church?

In 1776 the original Gothic nave and presbytery were replaced by a new late Baroque structure. The western tower, however, was left in place with its earlier Gothic-Renaissance character. As a result, the church today combines two architectural periods: a Baroque nave and presbytery alongside an older tower reshaped after the 16th-century fire.

What does the church look like today?

The building consists of the tower from the original medieval structure and a nave with a presbytery built in 1776. The tower is topped with a conical roof. After 1945 the building's condition declined, but in recent years the roof covering has been renewed.

What threats has the church faced over the centuries?

Because the village sits close to the Elbe River, the church has repeatedly been exposed to flooding — in 1845, 1890, and 2002. Despite this, both the tower and the nave have survived, standing as evidence of the village's long history.

Are there still events held around the church today?

The village keeps alive the tradition of the Saint Martin's pilgrimage (Svatomartinská pouť), honoring the church's patron saint. The church also takes part in the nationwide Night of Churches event, opening its interior to visitors beyond regular services.
