About this place
Church of Saint Martin in Všeruby crowns a hill above the town, standing on the grounds of a former fortified manor. It ranks among the oldest surviving religious buildings in the Plzeň-North region, with Romanesque origins dating back to the end of the 12th century.
When was the Church of Saint Martin built?
The church was raised at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries as the chapel of a fortified manor, sometimes referred to as a court (kurie). Earlier, between 1125 and 1140, the village belonged to the brothers Hrdibor and Vícemil. It was their descendants who later built a manor complex together with the church on the hill above Všeruby, making use of the site's commanding position for both defence and status.
What architectural style does the church represent?
The building is a single-nave structure made of carefully dressed ashlar stone, typical of early Romanesque architecture in the Czech lands. Its south facade preserves an original Romanesque portal, one of the most valuable architectural details on the site. Over the following centuries the church was altered in Gothic and Renaissance style, yet its Romanesque core remains clearly legible today.
What does the interior look like?
The presbytery ends in a semicircular apse covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, a solution typical of the oldest rural churches in Bohemia. The main nave has a flat ceiling. On the west side, an original Romanesque gallery survives, carried on three arcades resting on Romanesque columns — a feature that lets visitors read the church's original two-level layout, characteristic of churches founded alongside noble manors.
What role does the church serve today?
The Church of Saint Martin functions as a filial church administratively subordinate to the Diocese of Plzeň, and it serves as the cemetery church of Všeruby. It stands on a rise at the north-western edge of the town, surrounded by an old cemetery, which underlines its original defensive-sacred position above the village.
