About this place
The Church of St. Lawrence in Vracov stands on the town's main square, náměstí Míru, right in the heart of Vracov in the Kyjov region of South Moravia, Czech Republic. Nearly eight centuries old, it ranks among the oldest surviving sacred buildings in the area.
How old is the church, and what style did it start out in?
The oldest surviving part of the building, the presbytery, dates back to 1240 and has kept its original early Gothic form with Burgundian-Cistercian influences. That makes it a notable example of early medieval church architecture in this part of southern Moravia. While the rest of the structure has been reshaped many times since, the 13th-century presbytery has survived largely untouched.
What changes has the building gone through since then?
The first major renovation came in 1565 and focused mainly on the nave. In the early 17th century, the tower was rebuilt and fitted with two bells. A further Baroque-era renovation in 1734 added six new windows to the nave, changing how light falls inside the church. Together, these successive interventions left the building with a layered mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque features, each era leaving its own mark.
What can visitors see inside?
The interior decoration is mostly Baroque, with later additions layered on top. Above the main altar hangs a painting of St. Lawrence, the church's patron saint. Statues of two bishops, Saints Cyril and Methodius, flank the altar on either side, a nod to the Great Moravian missionary tradition associated with this region. The church now houses its third set of organs, with the current instrument dating from 1978.
Is there anything else to see around the church?
Behind the church, on its southern side, a modern Stations of the Cross was built between 2003 and 2004, featuring glass-panelled stations and a statue of Christ. This contemporary addition sits in deliberate contrast with the centuries-old church building right next to it.
Where exactly is Vracov, and how do you get there?
Vracov lies in southeastern Moravia, roughly 7 km from Kyjov, 12 km from Hodonín, and 25 km from Uherské Hradiště. The church sits directly on the town's main square, making it an easy landmark to find and a natural starting point for exploring Vracov.
