About this place
The Church of Saint Hedwig in Darkovice is one of the youngest churches in the Hlučín region — completed only in the early 2000s, yet already a well-known local landmark, visible from a distance thanks to its position on a hill above the village football pitch.
Why was a new church built in Darkovice?
For decades, residents of Darkovice had no church of their own and had to travel to neighboring villages for Mass. The design for the new building came from Ostrava-based architect Josef Kupka. Construction was organized by the Association of Roman Catholic Believers and financed entirely through donations and a public fundraising collection, without support from municipal or diocesan budgets. Parishioners from Darkovice and the neighboring village of Hať put in thousands of volunteer hours, which helped the church go up in a remarkable 15 months from start to finish.
When was the church consecrated, and by whom?
The solemn consecration took place on Sunday, 3 July 2005, at 1:30 PM, led by Bishop František Václav Lobkowicz of the Diocese of Ostrava-Opava. Since then, the church has belonged to the Roman Catholic parish of Hať, part of the Ostrava-Opava diocese.
What else is there to see at the site?
The church is the centerpiece of a small complex built to serve the practical needs of the local community: a new funeral hall with an adjoining cemetery, plus an access road and parking area. In 2010, Bishop František Václav Lobkowicz solemnly blessed a new organ built by the Kánský-Brachtl organ workshop from Krásné Loučky near Krnov, adding a proper instrument to the church's liturgical and concert life.
How do you get to the church in Darkovice?
Darkovice lies in the Hlučín region, within the Opava District of the Moravian-Silesian Region, close to the Polish border. The church stands on a hill above the village sports field, making its silhouette recognizable from some distance and a useful orientation point when exploring the area. The village is best reached by car or local public transport from Opava or Hlučín; parking is available right next to the church.
Why is it worth a stop?
The Church of Saint Hedwig shows how a small rural community can complete an ambitious building project almost entirely through its own labor and donations. For visitors touring the Hlučín region, it offers a striking contrast to the older, often Baroque churches found in nearby towns — a fresh, 21st-century piece of sacred architecture set against a typically Silesian landscape of fields and a village sports ground.
