Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Bohumín

Bogumin, Czechia

About this place

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Bohumín is a Gothic parish church standing on the main square (náměstí Svobody) in the Starý Bohumín district of Bohumín, a town in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, close to the Polish border. It is the oldest listed heritage building in Bohumín and one of the few structures in the area whose roots reach back to the Middle Ages.

How old is the church?

Historians assume that a wooden chapel first stood on this site around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, a common pattern for early Silesian settlements. That timber structure was eventually replaced between 1320 and 1400 by a masonry Gothic church. This later building, repeatedly rebuilt and repaired over the centuries, still forms the core of today's structure. Because of its age and unbroken religious use, the church is regarded as the oldest heritage monument within the town of Bohumín.

Who controlled the church over the centuries?

The parish's history mirrors the turbulent religious history of Silesia. In 1530 the church passed into Protestant hands, as the Reformation swept through much of the region. Nearly a century later, in 1620, the building underwent a Renaissance-style reconstruction that altered part of its appearance and layout. In 1631 the church was handed over to Benedictine monks from the monastery in Tyniec near Kraków. The monks, however, did not manage the parish to the satisfaction of church authorities, and due to ongoing neglect the church was taken from them in 1669; from then on, diocesan priests were appointed to lead the parish instead. Since that point the parish of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Bohumín has operated as a diocesan institution.

What happened in 1850?

On 22 August 1850 lightning struck the church tower. The strike destroyed the tower's shingle covering, and falling timber beams broke through the vault of the main nave. Repairing the roof and vault took several years; the reconstruction work was finished by 1853. This episode is one of the best-documented events in the church's history, and it explains why parts of the building's structure date only from the mid-19th century despite the church's medieval origins.

Is the church still a pilgrimage site today?

Yes. In 2004 the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Starý Bohumín, kept inside the church, was solemnly crowned. The ceremony restored the church's standing as a local pilgrimage destination, and the faithful from the surrounding area still visit for that reason. Beyond pilgrimage visits, the building continues to function as an ordinary parish church, hosting Sunday and holiday Masses for the residents of Starý Bohumín.
