Church of Saint George and the Virgin Mary

Pilzno, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint George and the Virgin Mary stands in the Doubravka district on the edge of Plzeň, right where the Berounka and Úslava rivers meet — and it's widely considered the oldest surviving church within the city's present-day boundaries.

How old is this church, really?

No documents survive from the church's earliest years, so its origins sit somewhere between history and legend. The most common account ties its founding to the return of Prague bishop Vojtěch (later canonised as Saint Adalbert) from exile in November 992, when he is said to have left twelve Benedictine monks at Kostelec near Plzeň — today's Starý Plzenec — for whom he founded Bohemia's first male monastery the following year at Břevnov, near Prague. The church itself is generally dated to the turn of the 10th century, yet the first written record confirming it existed only surfaces in 1361, in a note about a priest named Frána of Chrást being appointed to the parish on 31 March of that year.

Why was it built on this exact spot?

The church sits on a riverbank at the confluence of the Berounka and Úslava, close to where the medieval settlement of Týnec once stood before it disappeared. That patch of land is now part of Doubravka, one of Plzeň's districts, and the church is still ringed by an old cemetery with a number of notable historic gravestones and a Baroque ossuary.

How has the building changed over the centuries?

Underneath later additions, the church keeps a Romanesque core, onto which Gothic and then Baroque elements were layered over time — a pattern typical of Bohemia's oldest rural churches. In 1899, the architect Jan Kotěra, one of the leading figures of modern Czech architecture, produced a plaster model for a proposed reconstruction of the building. A more consequential intervention followed in 1912–1913, when the church underwent a thorough restoration: rough archaeological probes carried out inside destroyed Gothic wall paintings and inscriptions uncovered in the process, while a spiral staircase was added leading up to the gallery. Further repairs followed in the 1990s and again in the 2000s.

Is it still an active place of worship?

Yes, though it now holds the status of a filial, or branch, church — it belongs to the Doubravka parish within the Diocese of Plzeň rather than serving as a main parish church. Even so, it opens its doors each year for the national Night of Churches event, when visitors can step inside outside of regular service hours.

Why is it worth a detour from central Plzeň?

Few buildings anywhere let you stand inside a structure with roots reaching back over a thousand years, on a spot that has served as a place of worship ever since. Unlike the polished landmarks of central Plzeň, Doubravka offers a quieter, more local side of the city — a riverside neighbourhood where the history hasn't been dressed up for visitors, just left largely as it is.

Frequently asked questions

Is this genuinely the oldest church in Plzeň? Available sources describe it as the oldest surviving church within today's city limits, though the exact founding date can't be pinned down due to the lack of early written records.

Why is it dedicated to both Saint George and the Virgin Mary? The church carries a double dedication — to Saint George and to the Virgin Mary — which sets it apart from many neighbouring churches named after only one patron.

What survives from the original medieval structure? The Romanesque core remains underneath later Gothic and Baroque layers, although the 1912–1913 restoration destroyed some of the Gothic wall paintings that were uncovered inside at the time.

Can visitors go inside? The church opens for parish services in Doubravka and, once a year, for the Night of Churches event, when the building is accessible to visitors.

What else is nearby worth seeing? The historic cemetery surrounding the church, with its old gravestones, and the Baroque ossuary next to it together form a small but coherent historic ensemble on the riverbank.
