About this place
The Church of Saint Catherine in Bořislav is a Baroque parish church standing in the small village of Bořislav in the Teplice district of northern Czechia. The single-nave building replaced an earlier sanctuary on the same site, first mentioned in written sources as far back as 1352, making this one of the longer-used sacred sites in the region.
When was the current church built?
The church took its present Baroque form during a rebuilding campaign carried out between 1717 and 1721. The work is attributed to Christian Lagler, a builder associated with the Clary-Aldringen family, who was active on several commissions across their estates around that time. The result is a single-nave body with a three-sided termination at the chancel end, joined on the west side to a tower set into a gabled facade and linked to the nave by scroll-shaped wings — a layout typical of rural Bohemian Baroque architecture from the early 18th century.
What is worth seeing inside?
The interior is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes — a semicircular vault cut by small arched recesses above the windows, a solution that lets in extra light without weakening the structure. The plain single-nave layout and restrained decoration reflect the church's modest, rural character, in contrast to the more richly ornamented town churches of the same era.
Why was the church closed, and who saved it?
For years the building fell into gradual disrepair — as in many villages along the Czech-German borderland, shrinking population and a lack of regular upkeep took their toll on the structure. A group of local enthusiasts reversed the decline by founding the association Spolek pro záchranu kostela svaté Kateřiny v Bořislavi (Association for the Rescue of the Church of Saint Catherine in Bořislav). Through their sustained work — clearing debris, securing the building, and carrying out gradual repairs — the church reopened its doors to visitors after years of inaccessibility.
Is the church a protected monument?
Yes. The church, together with its rectory, has been listed as a Czech cultural monument since 3 May 1958, confirming its historical and architectural value regardless of the periods of neglect it went through.
