Church of Saint Barbara in Zahrádky

Zahrádky, Czechia

About this place

The Church of Saint Barbara in Zahrádky stands off the beaten path, roughly 1.5 km south of the present-day village of Zahrádky, in the Českolipsko region of northern Bohemia. It is the only surviving structure from the former village of Mnichov, which disappeared during the Thirty Years' War. Although the settlement that once surrounded it is long gone, the church itself has endured and remains a striking landmark in the surrounding countryside.

How old is the church?

The original Renaissance building was constructed on a Latin cross plan around 1550. The eastern part of the church dates from 1588, while the nave was most likely built after the end of the Thirty Years' War, as the region slowly recovered from the destruction of the conflict. Over the following centuries the building underwent Baroque alterations that gave it its current appearance. Since 1958 the church has been listed as a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

What can visitors see inside?

The interior has preserved several features of considerable historical value. These include a wooden pulpit and a spacious three-arm gallery, along with the main altar. A particularly notable element is the tomb of the Kaunitz family, a prominent Bohemian noble house, which points to the church's former importance as a burial site for aristocratic families.

What surrounds the church?

The church complex includes a bell tower, an adjoining cemetery, and a Baroque staircase leading up to the building. The grounds also hold the family tomb of the Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst family, another aristocratic house connected to the site. The surroundings are further marked by statues of Saint Jude Thaddeus and Saint Wenceslaus, the patron saint of Bohemia, underscoring the site's religious and local significance.

Why is it worth visiting?

The Church of Saint Barbara appeals to visitors looking for quiet and history away from crowds. Its isolated setting among fields and forests gives a visit here a very different character from sightseeing in a town center — it feels more like a contemplative walk in the footsteps of the vanished village of Mnichov, whose existence is now recalled only by this single building. The site also appears on the route of regional cultural events, including early music concerts held in historic sacral buildings across the area.
