About this place
The Church of Saint Adalbert is a modest but distinctive place of worship in České Budějovice, standing on Emy Destinnové Street in the Čtyři Dvory neighbourhood, right next to the University of South Bohemia campus and the local institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Rarely featured on standard city-centre sightseeing routes, it mainly draws visitors interested in twentieth-century sacred architecture and the history of local parishes.
When was it built?
The church was constructed between 1938 and 1939 to a design by Prague architect Jaroslav Čermák, with construction supervised by local České Budějovice builder František Stašek. The result is an elongated building with a tower placed asymmetrically against the facade — a layout that sets it apart from the more conventional, symmetrical church designs of the era.
What stands out on the outside?
The facade is dominated by a large wooden cross and carved wooden figures depicting St. Adalbert and Prussian warriors, the work of sculptor and woodcarver Josef Vítek. This carved decoration is arguably the most striking architectural detail in the entire Čtyři Dvory district.
What does the interior look like?
Inside, the church follows the so-called Beuron art style, a sacred-art movement that originated at the German Beuron Archabbey and combines monumental form with decorative simplicity. It is considered one of the more stylistically coherent examples of this movement in the region. Wedged between rows of terraced houses, the building survived post-war redevelopment precisely because of its recognised architectural value.
What is the history of the parish?
A rectory was built alongside the church. Between 1939 and 1950 it served as a Franciscan religious house, with the friars entrusted with the church's care. A major change came on 1 July 1990, when Bishop Miloslav Vlk established the city's fourth parish here, placing it under the care of the Salesians of Don Bosco, who still run it today.
Has the church been renovated recently?
Yes. Since May 2021 the building has undergone a comprehensive renovation. During the works, a clock was installed on the tower based on Jaroslav Čermák's original design, restoring an element that had been part of the building's concept nearly a century earlier.
How do you get there?
The church stands in the Čtyři Dvory district, in the western part of České Budějovice, next to the university campus. It's a convenient stop for anyone exploring the academic quarter and nearby research institutes — worth combining with a walk around the campus grounds.
