The choice of patroness was tied to the moment: it coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Fátima apparitions, the Marian visions reported in Portugal in 1917 by three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta.

The original design was commissioned from architect Manuel Sánchez Arroyo. After his accidental death in a traffic accident, architect Ángel Esteve Jaquotot took over the project with a new design for the church. The building was solemnly consecrated on 9 May 1971.

Notably, this was the first parish to be created in Gamonal after the former independent village was formally absorbed into the municipality of Burgos on 1 January 1955. The church is therefore closely tied to the district's transformation from a small rural settlement into a densely populated part of the city.
