Château Mouterde

Château Mouterde is a 17th-century manor house standing on the north slope of the Rochecardon valley, in the commune of Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d'Or in the Rhône department, within the hilly Monts d'Or district on the edge of the Lyon metropolitan area. Sitting at roughly 300 metres above sea level, the estate remains privately owned, so the interior is not open to visitors — for travellers, the appeal lies in the exterior view and a walk through the scenic Monts d'Or countryside surrounding it.

What is the history behind the château?

The building dates back to the 17th century, with its earliest section constructed around the 1700s and a later addition at the north gable. Over the centuries the residence carried several different names — Montfort, La Ronflarde, and Le Figuier — the second of which, "La Ronflarde," was still in common use as late as the early 20th century.

A turning point in the estate's history came in 1820, when it was purchased by the industrialist Louis Antoine Mouterde (1776–1822), a manufacturer of buttons and sewing thimbles. The château takes its present name from him. Mouterde modernised the interior to suit the tastes of a wealthy bourgeois family of the period. After his death, the property passed to his son, Emmanuel Mouterde (1801–1872), who continued the family's stewardship of the estate and served as mayor of Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d'Or from 1861 to 1870.

What does the architecture look like?

The estate consists of three independent buildings arranged on a north–south axis. The main, rectangular residence faces southeast and is flanked by two belvedere towers. A second, elongated building runs along the Petit Bois path, presenting its facade to the west and featuring a wing to the south. The third structure is a three-storey building added in the 19th century, with square corner towers on every corner except the northeast, and a distinctive semi-cylindrical tower marking the south facade.

The main buildings are roofed in tile, while the southern towers are covered in slate — a combination that gives the whole complex the varied silhouette typical of country estates in the Lyon region.

The château is set within a vast, wooded park on steeply sloping ground, crossed by a winding path that runs along the terrace to the south and west of the buildings. Because the estate is private, the park itself is not open to the public, but the surrounding Monts d'Or hills offer plenty of hiking trails and viewpoints from which to admire the château's silhouette against the Rochecardon valley.
