About this place
Čertovo břemeno ("the Devil's Burden") is a modest rock formation in the Jistebnice Highlands, within the cadastral area of Cunkov, part of the town of Jistebnice in the Tábor District of South Bohemia. The outcrop sits close to the summit of Javorová skála hill (723 m above sea level), west of Cunkov, and while it isn't large or dramatic, it draws hikers thanks to the folklore that has surrounded it for generations.
Where does the name come from?
The name has two competing origin legends, both featuring a devil struggling with a heavy load. In the simpler version, the devil was carrying a massive stone somewhere and grew too exhausted to continue. Spotting the rock outcrop, he set his burden down to rest for a moment. Under the weight of the load, he supposedly pressed his hoof into the stone — and a hoof-shaped hollow is still visible on top of the rock today, which local tradition treats as a mark left by that rest stop.
The legend of the destroyed church
The second, more elaborate story tells of a devil determined to destroy a church under construction in the nearby village of Nadějkov. He is said to have grabbed an enormous boulder somewhere near Vysoký Chlumec and flown toward the village, intending to hurl it at the building before it could be consecrated. Mid-flight, though, he realized he was too late — the church had already been completed and blessed. Furious at having failed, the devil threw the rock down to the ground near Cunkov instead. According to the legend, that is how Čertovo břemeno came to rest in the forest, a lasting reminder of the devil's defeat.
What the geology tells us
The rock matters beyond local folklore too — its name lends itself to a whole category of granitoid rock found in the southeastern part of the Central Bohemian Pluton. These are durbachites, dark-mineral-rich syenite-to-granite rocks characteristic of this part of the Jistebnice Highlands, making the site a small but genuine reference point for regional geology.
Who is it for?
Čertovo břemeno suits travelers looking for a quiet, short walk paired with a good local story rather than a dramatic viewpoint — the rock itself is small and easily reached from the trails around Cunkov and Javorová skála. It's a worthwhile stop for anyone exploring the Jistebnice Highlands who wants more than scenery: a glimpse into the tales that, for centuries, have explained the region's unusual rock formations.
