About this place
Vlásenický potok is a protected natural area in the Tábor District of South Bohemia, Czech Republic, situated roughly 2 kilometers south of the village of Dražice. It covers a deeply incised, canyon-like valley carved by the Vlásenický stream, which flows into the Lužnice River at the end of this stretch. The dramatic shape of the valley — steep, forested, and rocky in places — is the main reason this landscape earned protected status.
Why is this area protected?
The protection focuses on a well-preserved section of the valley that supports a population of ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris), known locally as pérovník pštrosí. This fern needs cool, shaded, consistently moist conditions, which the microclimate of the narrow canyon provides. For botanists and conservationists, the presence of a stable ostrich fern locality here is a key reason the site was designated a natural monument.
What does the valley look like?
The valley's vegetation shifts noticeably depending on aspect and elevation. Along the stream itself, in the northern part of the protected area, alder stands dominate — typical of the wet, waterlogged banks found along small streams. Higher up the slopes, spruce forest takes over, interspersed with small clusters of fir. In the steeper southern section, the forest changes character again, becoming a naturally mixed broadleaf stand led by lime and oak. This variety packed into a relatively small area means a walk through the valley passes through several distinct forest types over a short distance.
Where the Vlásenický stream meets the Lužnice River, there is a distinctive rock formation known locally as Jelení skok, or "Deer's Leap." It is one of the more recognizable landmarks along this stretch of the valley and a common destination for short walks starting from the Lužnice side.
Protection status
Since 2023, the area has held special nature protection status by decision of the South Bohemian Region. The protected territory is not a single continuous block but is divided into six separate segments running along both banks of the Lužnice River, reflecting the patchwork distribution of the valuable habitats found here.
Getting there and practical notes
Vlásenický potok lies within the Táborská pahorkatina (Tábor Highlands), close to the town of Tábor itself and the village of Dražice, making it a reasonably accessible destination for a day trip for anyone exploring this part of South Bohemia. Its proximity to the Lužnice valley means the surrounding area is popular with hikers and canoeists alike — the Lužnice River itself is one of the most frequently paddled waterways in the region.
