Centro de Arte e Cultura in Évora
Centro de Arte e Cultura is an art museum in Évora, Portugal, run by the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation. It occupies the former Inquisition Palace at Largo do Conde de Vila Flor, in the city's historic centre. Open since 2013, it pairs a visit to a historic building with contemporary art.
What is this place?
The centre is a space devoted to artistic and cultural initiatives. Its programme rests on exhibitions, with a focus on contemporary art, alongside performative projects and educational programmes. The foundation says it is guided by social commitment and sustainable practices, offering multidisciplinary, formative and inclusive programming for different audiences. The aim is to raise awareness of the arts and encourage people to engage with them.
Why does the building matter?
The Tribunal of the Holy Office was introduced in Portugal in 1536, and the first Inquisition was installed in Évora, in this very palace. Over time the building was expanded and adapted. It was significantly enlarged under Cardinal-King Henrique, and between 1622 and 1655 major works followed a design by Mateus do Couto, the royal architect of the Inquisitions.
Since 1950 the building has been classified as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público). Its conversion into an arts centre formed part of a project to rehabilitate the foundation's monumental heritage in Évora's historic centre.
What is worth seeing?
Besides temporary exhibitions, look out for the gallery with mural paintings from the second half of the sixteenth century. Tourist descriptions present it as palatial mural painting found nowhere else in the country. The venue also hosts guided visits in which historians discuss the architectural traces of the former Inquisition.
